Installation and Maintenance Instructions for Terracotta Tiles

Terracotta tiles are porous and typically vary in shape, pattern, and color. Don't be concerned by light salt or lime deposits – this is normal. If you care for your terracotta floor properly, it will be easy to maintain. This timeless floor only gets more beautiful with age! Furthermore, terracotta creates a pleasant indoor climate and is excellent for underfloor heating.

Laying Terracotta Tiles: Tips and Advice

Have your terracotta floor laid only by experienced professionals who are familiar with the material. Begin only after all other construction work has been completed to prevent unnecessary contamination. Ensure that no adhesive residues or grout are left on the tiles. If a cement haze remains, use the Lithofin Cement Haze Remover to remove it.

Adhering Terracotta Tiles: Steps and Techniques

Since our terracotta tiles come in various sizes, it is difficult to align them visually. It is better to work with sections where the variations are not too large. The size variations are compensated by the grout, so the joint width will not be uniform throughout.

Grouting and Maintaining Terracotta Tiles: Essential Tips

Terracotta can be grouted with a mixture of sand/cement (3:1 sand to cement ratio). Add water until a slightly liquid consistency is reached. There are also ready-to-use grouts specially designed for terracotta, such as Kiesel Servoperl Royal. Apply approximately 2 m² of surface and clean the area thoroughly immediately with a sponge and clean water. By pre-treating the tiles with Lithofin Pre Wax, excess grout can be more easily removed from the tile. However, be absolutely sure to only treat the surface of the tile, not the joints, or the adhesion of the joints may be compromised. If the floor is thoroughly cleaned immediately during grouting, it will save a lot of work later. Please do not cover the freshly laid floor so the moisture can escape – and do not walk on it for 72 hours. The first cleaning after the floor is completed should only be done after two weeks. For regular cleaning, use Lithofin Easy-Clean Cotto. If necessary, the floor can be additionally treated with Lithofin Wax Finish for extra protection. However, be aware that this will give the tiles a slight shine.
