Frequently Asked Questions About Terrazzo Tiles
Frequently Asked Questions About Terrazzo Tiles
How is terrazzo made?
Terrazzo is a mixture of Portland cement and aggregate (small stones, glass, or metal particles). This mixture is hydraulically pressed into large blocks measuring 300x120x120 cm, without the use of oil or gas. After a drying period, the blocks are cut into slabs and then further processed into tiles.
Is terrazzo responsibly produced?
Yes, our terrazzo is produced under strict regulations. Below are the methods we apply in our production process, all accredited by third parties and inspected annually:
- EPD Certificate
- Awarded by TÜV Italia for environmental product declaration.
- LEED Certificate
- The LEED certification system (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is an international certification program promoting high-performance materials for use in sustainable construction projects.
- EN 13748-1
- The European standard that defines the properties and test methods for terrazzo suitable for indoor use.
- DIN 18500-1
- Establishes strict requirements for terrazzo and is annually inspected by the German Institute Güteschutz Hessenbeton e. V. in Wiesbaden.
- CE Marking
- "CE" stands for "Conformité Européenne," which translates from French as "European Conformity." The CE label is intended to promote people's well-being and ensure a clean and safe workplace.
Is terrazzo a natural product?
Yes and no. The pebbles often come from natural stone quarries as waste material, but cement is not a natural product. So, terrazzo is a combination of natural and industrial materials.
How does terrazzo get its color?
In two ways:
- The concrete can be colored with organic pigments.
- The color of the aggregate determines the final look.
Can I choose my own terrazzo color?
Yes, but you would need to purchase an entire block. Depending on the thickness of the slabs, this can result in a surface area of approximately 150 m².
Is terrazzo sustainable?
Yes, it only requires a small amount of cement, aggregate, and water. No gas or fuel oil is needed, as it is hydraulically pressed. There is no need for firing in a kiln, making it an extremely eco-friendly product.
Where can terrazzo be used?
In your home, such as in the hallway, kitchen, garden room, or bathroom. It is also widely used in public buildings, hospitality spaces, offices, and even airports.
How is the price/quality ratio of terrazzo?
Terrazzo is an extremely hard material, practically indestructible, and has a long lifespan. Considering these qualities in relation to its price, terrazzo is a very cost-effective product. It is durable, both classic and contemporary well worth the investment.
Can I order terrazzo in different sizes?
We always have 60x60x2 cm terrazzo in stock. Other sizes can certainly be ordered, but certain minimum order quantities may apply. Please contact us to discuss the possibilities.
Does terrazzo need to be sealed?
Yes, it should initially be treated with the products we recommend. This should be done immediately after installation and then periodically once every two years. For daily maintenance: mop with a clean cloth and water mixed with a small amount of stone soap.
Do you offer bulk discounts?
Of course! We determine this on a case-by-case basis.
Can I order samples?
Yes, you can. The maximum sample size is 20x20x2 cm, with a limit of four different references. Shipping and sample costs are at your expense. Returns are not possible.
Can terrazzo be specially finished or cut into custom shapes?
Yes, at an additional cost. For example, we can add a beveled edge, bullnose, or Hungarian point pattern. We can also round off stair treads or cut round or oval garden tables. The possibilities are nearly endless—contact us for special requests.
Can I have other terrazzo products made?
Yes, we also make custom stairs, window sills, and countertops. Contact us to discuss the options.
