About Terrazzo

Terrazzo is the Italian word for “ Terrazzo is made by mixing cement or clay with marble chips, small pebbles and other additions, such as resin, epoxy or polymers to improve characteristic properties In the Netherlands and Belgium it is often named granito or “ whereas in Germany, France and Switzerland it is known as “Terrazzo“

There are several production procedures to make Terrazzo In the first procedure large blocks are hydraulically pressed, then cut in to slabs and polished, then cut to size In the second procedure, the blocks are made with a vacuum forming process In these cases, blocks of 300 x 150 x 150 cm are not exceptional In the third procedure blocks will not be formed, but the light fluid mass will be poured into a mould of a particular size, pressed with a hydraulic press and cut and polished The advantage of this third method i The polishing or honing process creates the first and foremost ‘look and feel’ of the finished product The three most popular finishes are high gloss, velvety gloss, or matte gloss.
Currently many finishes can be achieved even a tumbled effect, where the granulate raises slightly above the surface of the tile body This is an ideal way to avoid slippery surfaces due to wet conditions (outdoors or in a shower).

The cement base of Terrazzo can be colored in any thinkable shade, moreover the granulate does not necessarily have to be stone chips, it could be in glass, in metal or even shells such as mother of pearl, abalone or oyster. This makes the variations almost endless. If your request is for over 100 m2, we at the Tegel BV can make any colour combination for you, to match your interior.
